Stanford 2012 Nobel Prize Winners

October 15, 2012 - Economist Al Roth has been awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his work on market design. He shares the prize with Lloyd Shapley, professor emeritus at UCLA. Roth, a visiting professor who will become a full Stanford faculty member at the start of 2013, is a pioneer in the field of game theory and experimental economics and in their application to the design of new economic institutions. October 15, 2012 - 2012 Nobel laureate Alvin Roth talks about his economic research and the surprise phone call from Stockholm telling him he had won the prize on October 15, 2012. At a press conference at Stanford that same day, Roth explained his application of game theory to real world problems, such as finding matches for kidney donors and helping schools and students find the right matches for each other. Brian Kobilka, MD, professor and chair of molecular and cellular physiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, has received the 2012 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. He shares the prize with Robert Lefkowitz, MD, professor of biochemistry and of medicine at Duke University. The two men were selected for their work on G-protein-coupled receptors, a number of proteins that reach through cell walls.
