The beginning of this movie, built around Jack Nicholson's slow and reluctant realization that he may be becoming a werewolf, really sparkles. Jack's performance, as a slightly grungy middle-aged everyman caught up in an absurd and increasingly frightening scenario, makes the first part of the film compelling viewing.
Act II introduces the charismatic Michelle Pfieffer as a rich bad girl, upon whom Jack becomes increasingly dependent as his condition begins to spiral beyond his control. As in any good horror thriller, secrets then come to light and the unknown and previously unthinkable begin to intrude into the contemporary world.
The finale, however, is a disappointing mish-mash of action thriller clichés, ie. fights, chases etc. and serves as a classic example of Hollywood's now lost capability to properly script Act III in a modern action movie. It's a shame, as it lets down a strong Act I and a pretty watchable Act II.

Hey, every time this movie comes on the T.V. I make it a point to watch it. Each character's part is well cast. Jack Nicholson does a great job as a man who is turning into a wolf. The writers did a great job of concentrating on how his senses become more and more acute as his transforms into the "wolf". James Spader's role is okay, but not too impressive. He is much better as an attorney in "Boston Legal". Michelle plays a sophisticated rich girl who finally meets the man who really understands her, a.k.a, Jack the "Wolf". Overall the movie really touches on a lot of different aspects of life and the roles that each plays in it. Well directed and great casting.

I am 51 and I give it 10 stars. The struggles we have, we fight as ourselves. But the expectations we have to live up to are the expectations of other people. How do we cope? How do we fight and how do we finally give up? I think this movie explores these questions without any compromise.

If you're looking for blood & guts and/or amazing special effects, then maybe this is not for you. This film is romantic & witty. There are good performances from the three leads (Nicholson, Pfeiffer, Spader) & also from David Hyde Pierce. Although many people thought the werewolf sequences were old fashioned, I enjoyed them myself. And the ending is marvellous. No cliches here. 9/10

Lots of excellent talent gets wasted in this uneven movie that crawls around like it was given a tranquilizer early on. Publisher Jack Nicholson gets bitten one late evening by a wolf and immediately becomes a crazed creature of the night in the process. He realizes that his cannibalistic instincts are not only dangerous for himself, but also those around him (notably love interest Michelle Pfeiffer). Also along for the ride is co-worker/super jerk James Spader (appropriately slimy as always). Director Mike Nichols (no idea why he did this picture) tries to create an intelligent thriller that mixes with romantic, horror and supernatural elements. The entire combination is more dizzying and confusing than alluring. Nicholson's possibly interesting characterization is eliminated fast in favor of silly situations and a transparent tone. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

"Wolf" starts out very well. The send-up does honor to the old werewolf formula. Nichols brilliantly sets the fable in the backstabbing world of New York publishing during a hostile takeover. And the wolf-bound protagonist is an aging publisher, in the process of losing both his job and wife to a younger, duplicitous colleague. This works very well for the first 2/3 of the movie. Then, as in a similar effort for vampires, "The Lost Boys", the wheels fall off. It appears that the director doesn't know where to go with the plot, and the conclusion is botched. At the movie's end, the viewer is left feeling that this was one that got away. Too bad.

After having seen the movie many times because I thoroughly enjoy it every time I see it on cable,I have to ask myself that most obvious of questions-will there ever be a sequel? I have read all of the comments and not one person mentions that often dreaded word. Why is that? The movie was released in 1994-12 years ago-and since then Nada on a sequel. Does Mike Nicols want to direct the sequel to this marvelous film? Is Michelle Pfeiffer too busy with her children and other film projects to even want to do the sequel or is she merely biding her time until the right script comes a knocking on her front doorstep? After all, the ending of the film leaves the door wide open for a sequel- and a very good one too, I hope.

I had not seen this movie for a few years. I couldn't remember much, but today I gave it a try and boy... What a blast! Maybe I was too young then (I'm 24 now) or else, but the thing is I absolutely love this film!!!!!. This a classic werewolf tale told for adults. There are no cheap tricks, no wooden acting, no unnecessary gore. This movie has a great cast, a stylish direction and a marvellous script. In a way is a Marvel comic for the adults brought in it's full glory to the screen. A man beaten by an animal and getting his powers (Spider-man anyone?): sharp smell, great strenght, well... you get the picture. Nicholson and Pffeifer make such a great couple. The lines they throw at each other are just wonderful (the kitchen scene is outstanding). Plus we have a Morriconne score...What else can we say? An overlooked gem! Comic-book buffs check it out!
