WILLARD is a remake done right, if you have to do a remake at all. It takes everything that was unique to the original 70s film, then re-contextualizes it with a different tone. The original film was more grounded and slower-paced, more a character study than a horror film. The 2003 version is a Burton-esque dark comedy, where the main character is mostly unhinged from the beginning. Unlike the original, this isn't so much a descent into madness as he's already halfway there to begin with.
I did have issues with the pacing, which seemed a bit more rushed than the 1971 movie, but the acting is splendid and the direction is strong, blending industrial and gothic aesthetic to perfection.

All I can say is that this movie proves that Crispin Glover is one of the most talented actors of our time. His performance is amazing! I loved this movie, and it is perfect for a lonely evening. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a deep story of a troubled, lonely man. This is not an action/horror flick, and it shouldn't be.

And so it comes to pass, that movie that you like, but can't quite put a finger on just why... I mean come on, Analyze The Rocky Horror Picture Show from a critics standpoint and its utter garbage.. also as it is for my, in this remake of "Willard" its been about 20 years since the last time i saw "Willard" and unlike the dime a dozen horror movies with a guy and a chainsaw, its refreshing to see a "Hitchcockian" film around...something that wells up more of an Eerie feeling inside..then a scared jump out of your seat thrill, i enjoyed Crispin Glovers acting, as usual... funny thing is though, i dont think his character in this film is far from his real life persona, now i say that not knowing him in any way other then from his performances, but he pulls it off so naturally that he makes it look effortless, also i enjoyed seeing Mr. Ermey yelling..giving me Full metal jacket flashbacks...This movie is a must see 10/10 *****

I absolutely LOVED this film. It was the role Crispin Hellion Glover was born to play. He is very creepy and likable in this role. The movie is scary, but goes easy on the gore. But by doing this, it makes old lady barf really, really sick (you'll see). Please go see this movie, it needs your help! You will not be disappointed!

I enjoyed Willard. It's excellently acted by Crispin Glover, and paints a haunting picture of a pathetic loner who finds friendship in rats that have infested his basement. That brief description of the plot sounds ridiculous for a movie, but you just can't take it too seriously, as the tone of the movie is never too serious. In other words, it's not a horror. I went to see it with some friends who just didn't get it. They thought it was just another horror movie, so they thought it was cheezy and funny. When Willard first befriends the rats, it would be a ridiculous scene in a horror movie, but it works well in this dark comedy. Some of the lines are funny, but I believe that was the directors intentions. Other times the movie is very clever. Willard's mom is also excellent.

I love this movie. It improves over the original on so many levels.Crispin Glover proformances as Willard should have been noimated on the oscars.I mean he put the right amount of craziness and insaniness in the role, that made me care for him.So what if it's PG-13,the first one was PG.Also,BEN was more evil in here than the original,he even looked evil.Sometimes I coudn't tell which was CG-BEN and which was real-BEN.The ending left it open for a sequel, not the original Ben sequel, but one of it's own turf.Get it,it's a descent horror with a great leading role.

This is the best movie I've seen in a long time, everything about it was perfect. I'll be seeing it again before it leaves theaters. The acting was sound, the rats when computerized still looked real, and the plot was believable (if not a little sad at times). About the only fault the film does have is the sounds that seem to emit from the rats, totally unrealistic. The 1971 version is one of my favorite films, and for something to out do that, it has to be good.

Not a great movie, though could be nice to look at when not having the energy to go rent an ordinary thriller movie. If you're afraid of rats this is the movie to tickle yourself with =)
There is a small reference I feel, to Norman Bates in Psycho, both the actors (son and mother) and the atmosphere in the first half of the movie implies a few parallells. Nice movie, not great but good. They should however get things going a bit earlier than here, you tend to get bored after 20 minutes of weirdness.
