I'm not ready to get out the torches and pitchforks and lead a lynch mob after Mr Martin -- not yet anyway! Having read the early reviews here, I went to the cheapo theater with low expectations, and emerged pleasantly surprised. There were some genuine laughs from time-to-time, plus a great cast (shoulda got more out them). My daughter and grandchildren were delighted.
The overall plot is reasonably clever -- so, that leaves the gags. Some work - some don't work that well, as evidenced by the fact that many IMDb'ers want to talk about why some of the gags don't 'feel right', or seem to 'take too long'. (No really successful comedians ever had people talk about how their gags don't seem to be working -- people just talk about how much they laughed. When people start analyzing why your comedy isn't funny, it ain't workin'). But we had a few chuckles in this one, if not a bunch of sustained belly laughs.
Everyone says we should stop comparing Steve Martin to Peter Sellers, but, if you watched the original films, how can you stop comparing? Sellers created this character, just as Atkinson created Mr. Bean and Cleese created Basil Fawlty. And Steve Martin tries to do Sellers anyway (his 'little yellow friend' line?). He can't quite pull it off, and he hasn't really found a shtick that works. For one thing, his eyes are always popping, like he's trying to pass gas. Sellers' eyes were quiet. His Clouseau was genuinely 'clueless'. And, I've mentioned elsewhere at IMDb that Sellers was a major Radio comedy star before doing films - that puts him in a league with Abbott & Costello, Burns & Allen, Bob Hope and Jack Benny. These guys built amazing gags that kept both live and radio audiences in stitches, using well-constructed devices such as bizarre characterizations, rapid exchanges, and nifty voices. Mr. Martin's roots in comedy are from a different - and later - era.
Overall, though, if you need an amusing and harmless diversion, go see this at the reduced-price theater. For $4, I'm in - $20 for a date and me, plus popcorn? where are those torches and pitchforks?

After master thief "The Tornado" steals some of the world's greatest treasures -- including the Pink Panther diamond -- Inspector Clouseau (Steve Martin) is selected to join an international "dream team" of detectives to hunt down the renowned cat burglar. Joining him are investigators from Italy (Andy Garcia), England (Alfred Molina), and Japan (Yuki Matsuzaki), as well as an expert on the Tornado's past crimes (played by Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai). As they track down the Tornado, the other detectives grow tired of Clouseau's bumbling, embarrassing ways -- while the inspector and his faithful assistant Nicole (Emily Mortimer) try to not to act on their obvious mutual attraction.

I feel the negative press for this Steve Martin paycheck movie is overdone although ?The French Connection? this collection of sight gags this is not. The movie?s 7 attributed screenwriters deserve no awards but the casting agents deserve an Oscar: where else will you see John Cleese, Jean Reno, Jeremy Irons Alfred Molina and the late Andy Garcia on the same screen? You could also watch for the absurdist touches such as the casting of the uber-British Cleese as French police official Dreyfus or the name of the restaurant twice burned to the ground by Martin?s Clouseau which translates to ?A Plate of Nothing? or the wild sacrilege of Clouseau shaking out The Shroud of Turin. I?m not saying it is worth renting, but if you can get it for free spend a few minutes with it.

Shame to see Steve Martin in this as I've loved some of his other films, this was awful and had a terrible plot. The pratfalls and stunts were mildly funny in places and some acting was decent but overall it's a below average comedy and no where near as good as the Peter Sellers films.

Steve Martin is extremely funny and can pull off a perfect Frenchy accent. The choice of cast is excellent except for Aishwara Rai. Her acting skills are terrible. She's just a beauty who should appear in ads only. They could have easily gotten a prettier female who can act.
Another downside to the movie is that you get a "hint" to who the real bad guy is from the start making the focus of the movie the way it is discovered. It would have been more interesting to keep the thief of the Pink Panther unknown till the end. Nonetheless, the movie keeps you entertained and laughing all the way.
I would definitely recommend this movie to those who are in for a good laugh.

Yes, I was drunk when I saw this movie, and I enjoyed the experience. That doesn't say much about me as a person and it equally doesn't say much for this movie. So while I found enough of the jokes to be funny thus enjoying the movie, I was also having cognitive difficulty on account of 100 proof rye whiskey. They list the alcohol content on a bottle for good reason- alcohol is a deadly poison, it can kill you. Weed is not going to kill anybody, weed is a saint, but booze, oh brother let me tell you, booze kills. To my credit I was not high on glue or paint, which is something I think anyone should be proud of. We will each of us die inside of our bodies, that's how it ends.

I've never blogged on a movie before. I love the Pink Panther franchise. And Steve Martin is a comedic genius. I wasn't that thrilled with Martin's first PP movie (it was good for a few laughs), so I did not have high expectations for this one. My low expectations were not met.
It was all I could do to stay for the whole movie. It was just plain boring. Eventually I began to feel pain for the cast. How could so many good actors be involved in such a bomb? The plot is paper thin, the dialog is inane and banal, and the movie is rarely ever actually funny. What a disaster.
Stay home and rent an original PP; or if you're in the mood for great Steve Martin, rent Roxanne.
