This is a good movie with a decent plot line. It starts when a family moves into a new house and the two brothers find a strange locked up hole in the basement. After they open it, strange and creepy things start happening. Some of those things being a dead little girl, a dead police officer, and creepy joker doll. The two boys and the girl next door soon start to figure out the connection to the weird things and the hole in the basement. The girl next door then tells the boys about "Creepy Carl", the man who used to live there before them. They go to an abandoned glove factory where Carl lives now, and he tells them that the darkness is coming for all of them.

This film was so boring from start to finish. Predictable, obvious & un-frightening. For some reason, the film has gained this huge reputation of being scary, when in all honesty, there really is nothing to even tense up about. Not even young children would be frightened by the film. The best points about the movie are the visual effects & half the time you are distracted by Chris Massoglia & his awful acting to even acknowledge the effects. Nathan Gamble out-shone the cast, & he is significantly younger than them all! Totally un-realistic ending, with laughable moments of pure stupidness, such as Chris being smacked across the face with a belt & recovers quickly, only for the belt to be used again to destroy a wall?! However, the actual filming of the movie & the visual effects (& Nathans' acting) makes the movie. (Only Just). Awful acting & frankly a laughable & un-scary story.

One of the best movies I saw lately. The only reason I do not give a full 10 points is that the end of the movie seemed hurried. Seeing the long intro, they could have added an extra 30 minutes. It has been said before but the idea is great. It reminds a bit of Freddy Krueger and a lot of "They" and resides primarily on one question: What if your fears would become real? And when we grow up we are told that monster do not really exist, and that the only monsters hold an human face. The reality is that even if monsters exist or not as an adult you are trained to ignore them. It is PAP (Problem of Another Person). It is similar in a way to the idea from the anime Melody of Oblivion. As I said great movie, but this idea could have been exploited much better.

Great movie and scared the heck out me. And I'm a adult. Plays on your fears and childhood memories. Hate clowns. Better than some actual adult horrors without the gore and crudeness.

You can watch it more than once, it has it all. There are great films u can watch only one time, well this one is re-watchable. Atmospheric, great photography, soft cam, good storyline, excellent cast of young actors/actress, highly entertaining mystery/trill/horror. And... nice touch of that teen spirit fling in the air, do u remember it ??? Comparison: The 'burbs (1989), The Ring (2002), Disturbia (2007), If u are able to pay to see it, go for it...

I watched this film while home alone one day, and it gave me nightmares for weeks. It is definitely a fantastic film, the acting is super, there are some funny lines, and the spooky scenes are really well done. However I don't think the rating is right. It was terrifying. Especially the clowns and the zombie-type little girl. Just thinking about it now makes me shiver. I think it should of been at least a 12, possibly a 15. But a great film overall, I would definitely recommend it if you like creepy films that aren't all action and violence, and if you like psychological thrillers. I'm surprised that it didn't do better, perhaps it's because all the main actors are kids.

Basically it's a Disney plot for 12 year olds with a couple of scary bits to market it as a horror. The darkness in the bottomless Hole forces people to face up to their past. And of course in the end the heroes pull through, better for their experience. A lot of horror clichés - the abandoned fair ground, the spooky little girl (which was well done at first), people walking out of the shadowy basement when they should be running. I liked the actors, and the production had plenty of money behind it. But the story was confused, lacking a reason for this supernatural force and ending weakly as if it were all a dream. There was too much music to create effect, and the swing between horror and flippant comedy did not work.

Siblings Dane and lucas lives with their mom, Susan and they just moved to a new neighborhood. The only thing that matters to Dane is the beautiful girl next door, Julie. Susan spends most of her time in office. Everything was going well until Dane and Lucas finds a black hole in their basement. Technically, the film can be watchable without getting bored and Joe Dante actually reminds me of old style film making. It's a simple movie that can be watchable in relaxation time. The effort was made to make a nice engaging horror movie, unfortunately it doesn't particularly deliver. Overall, it's a one time watchable flick.

Kind of normal horror theme. Kids find and accidently released a ancient horror that hunts them. Its ok. The thing I found stupid in this movie was the old man Carl. He had lived at the house with the hatch and had locked it. Then he kinds of leave it like that moves away to adifferent part of the city. He dont really hides the hatch and leaves the keys in a box just next to the hatch. He is then angry at the kids for opening the hatch and blame them for releasing the evil. This part is kind of stupid and feel like a cheap way to get the story to start. This made me lose interest in the rest of the movie when I was seeing it.
