Before the trauma of Cats - will he ever make another film? - Tom Hooper made some small, interesting films with very good casts (and one very big film with a good cast in Les Miserables). This is one such; as an adaptation of the book, it takes a very different tone to the novel, which in itself is neither a good nor bad thing. But the end result is that despite the terrific lead performance from Michael Sheen and the avoidance of the difficulty of putting football on film by largely not doing so, it's all a bit too nice and cozy, like a feature-length episode of the sort of sitcom we used to get on early Sunday evenings on the BBC.

Great film that relives the days when football was a proper game, not the preening staged sort of fayre offered up nowadays. Soundtrack is also brilliant. The Damned United is my favourite sports film.

In the last weekend, I have watched The Damned United (2009 release year), a movie was set in England '70s, was a special moment to England, football world champion in 66 at home.
The film was directed by Tom Hooper and was a Michael Seen as the leading actor, who was interpreter the legendary England coach, Brian Clough. The center of this movie was the Brian Clough fast moment in Leed United Football Club, considered the most learning moment in his career because he makes many mistakes. This movie is a sports documentary and drama.
The cast includes Colm Meaney as Don Revie, the most champion coach in England '60s, and Timothy Spall as Peter Taylor, assistant-coach of Brian Clough, considered the best identification of talents ever. The Damned United was nominated for 5 premiums but won nothing.
In my opinion, this movie doesn't have special effects and soundtracks in highlights. I extremely recommend this movie if you like football game and stories about human behaviors.

This was a very good film, probably one of my favourite films of all time. When I watched this film, I was of course aware of Brian Clough and Don Revie but I had no real prior knowledge of their rivalry, nor the exploits of Clough at Leeds United but this did not hinder my enjoyment of this piece.
To have Michael Sheen as Brian Clough was a superb casting decision, he portrayed Clough brilliantly throughout the film. Timothy Spall did a great job playing Brian Clough's long-suffering assistant Peter Taylor. The two actors were not only great as individuals but as a duo they worked very well together in this film.
I would highly recommend this film to any football fan but even if you are not really interested in the sport 'The Damned United' is a very good piece of drama that is definitely worth a watch.

In my opinion Tom Hooper should have been nominated for this movie instead of The Kings Speech. The Damned United is a brilliant written, acted and directed movie - not only for football/soccer fans. And you do not need to be a follower of English Premiership necessarily. Thanks to Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall, the characters feel deeply human. Itis an affecting and moving story about friendship - and what happens if one becomes too obsessed with his goals. It also is a another proof of he sheer brilliance of Peter Morgan. Witty dialogues and close to the real incidents. This is a true, rare gem that needs to be seen and I recommend it highly to you.

Most good sports movies aren't about football, so it's a good thing to find a great film like this and it's about football.. not any football also football in England. What a lovely combination for a hardcore Premier League lover.

This is one of the best films of the year. Michael Sheen is outstanding in his portrayal and the only quarry I have with the film is that though Timothy Spalls is an excellent actor he just isn't Peter Taylor, a quiet charming and handsome man.
Leeds United - the most hated football team in the UK have been at the receiving end of the FA for years. Don Revie achieved what few people could have and the greatest manager that England never had went in so ham fisted that it spelt disaster before he opened his mouth.
This is football fans delight and anyone who loves gritty true stories will be compelled by it.

The movie was amazing. Sheen was fantastic. I love older football and I think football right now is not as interesting as the past. Clough is one of the best English managers of all time and they really honored him in this movie. The best football related movie of all time in my opinion.
