to me this was a big disappoint. the only aspects worth watching are the two fathers and the respective actors that are doing a GREAT job, showing a whole range of emotions and definitely deserve credit; especially Joaquin Phoenix as the mourning father that just can not let go. however those are the only positive thoughts; the suspense is NON-existent, a story line well too predictable that only target emotions in a well to known moralistic way. it is a great drama for parents and for TEACHING purposes but nowhere close to entertain any type of imagination, including revenge themes or practical solutions. there is absolutely nothing new here that has not been done before , actually much less since the ending is just not there in a real sense. more like getting the viewer involved and then tell him that all it matters is being "politically correct". waste of time overall, direction and sound are quiet good, but only in the very classic aspect. might as well be considered a "b" movie if it would not be for the 2 strong performance for which i actually give the 4 stars.

Well acted, nice cinematography, smart way to connect the viewer to the story . Few crumbs of influence from Crime and Punishment by Dostoievsky. The only problem - in the last part the director seems lost in story, giving the impression of improvisation. But, sure, beautiful roles, especially Joaquin Phoenix.

This is a superbly acted movie, very intuitive, sad, and definitely worth watching. Jennifer Connelly is outstanding, really all three leads are tremendous. A relatable very well done film. The miss of the police force when Ruffalo's character goes in hooks the viewer and creates believable tension. Ending is realistic and satisfying. Touches on multiple aspects of the situation and base for the story. The viewer is not left with holes to figure out on their own. The actors convey the intensity of the situation. Moody, intense without going overboard. A human story with tragedy that teaches multiple lessons. Get ready to be impressed!

I love Joaquin Phoenix. This movie is well acted and you really feel as if the tragedy actually happened. Has a Hitchcock feel of building suspense. You know he is going to be caught but keeps you on the edge of your chair as to when.

Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation full of doubt and uncertainty that affect the path in front of us but it doesn't necessarily mean that we are a bad or a good person, sometimes we just need to be heard to confront our fear in order to move past it. What got my attention in this movie was that in the beginning, Ethan was sane and caring for his family while Dwight was frightened by the reality and the burden but around the time Lucas had a fight in school Dwight started to become responsible for his actions in order for his son not to end up like himself while Ethan was getting involved in rage and revenge instead of being there for his family. They both needed to talk to their loved ones and face reality. In conclusion, there are a few outstanding scenes that are spectacular by Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly and Mark Ruffalo's acting, but the script wasn't able to bring out the true performance I expected from the actors.

It's one of those movies. The story is good and the actors are convincing and then it turns into all out * on the screen. I do not want to see other people having orgasms on screen. I am just not comfortable with that. Leave * in an industry of its own -- I am not for its abolition. When * seeps into everyday television movies then no wonder no one can get thrilled except by watching hard core stuff all the time. Hollywood and the * industry should be separated. Pornography should completely remove itself from Los Angeles and relocate to some place an hour from Las Vegas.

It was probably the actors but it really made me feel the emotion of loss and of being the cause of someone's loss. Really moving. I definitely advise people to watch. Of course it's not prefect but it really is a good film and just to see Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo act superbly would be well worth it as it had my eyes watering at every dramatic event. Apart from the two leading males I believe Jennifer Connely was very good as her role as the morning mother. The story is well though of and I believe the plot is sturdy but could of done with being a little longer. If you enjoy steady paced films that stir your emotions up slightly and leave you questioning what you would do in certain situations I believe you should give this film a go.

A parent knowingly lets their child stand on the side of a 35 mph road to let fireflies free. Repeat that to yourself. The movie wants us to get caught up in the drama of the parent that let this happen act as if they didn't put their child in mortal danger by letting him stand on the side of a road. Worse is the movie shows the worst behavior between divorced parents and parents that can't accept their own bad or incompetent actions. The children in this situation should have asked to be emancipated from such toxic people.
