A solid action film, with the usual touch of humour.
Yes, I've read the novels, but the film's seem stand alone, in the film world, Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher.
Tom is not a favourite but an OK actor, but I don't rate him on size alone, he brings a lot more to the table than many give him credit for.
I liked this movie, I suppose I knew the plot, but there were significant changes from the book. This kept even the most avid book reader on their toes, a movie does not have to be exactly the same as the book.
Even my wife enjoyed it!
All in all an entertaining action flick for all ages.

Lee Child always made sure the reader understood the size of Jack Reacher as an introduction to almost every fight. In this movie everybody is larger than Tom Cruise. In one fight scene he gets tossed about by one guy who isn't very big. In the first movie you could overlook the fact that Tom Cruise is not even 6 feet tall but not so in this movie.
If you've read this book then you'll be so disappointed in this movie. In the book the part of Reacher's supposed daughter and her mother are both likable characters. In the movie she's a juvenile delinquent and almost immediately unlikable.
Lee Child wrote Reacher as an intelligent man reasoning through the situations he found himself. You could see that in the first movie. In this movie we don't get a chance to see that intelligence. Lee Child wrote the Susan Turner character as a smart woman but that doesn't come through either. It isn't always about the action. It's also about him being intelligent and solving the problem.
I walked out on this movie in under 30 minutes. The first Reacher movie allowed Reacher fans to accept the tiny Tom Cruise as Reacher. This movie makes it impossible to take that leap. Reacher always seemed to me to making his way toward something as he worked through the problems he found himself overcoming. I admit to not seeing this film through to the end but it seemed to me that in this film he was running from the bad guys. The Reacher I know always plays offense.
Save yourself the disappointment. Watch the first Reacher movie again or read the book again. Either would be more pleasing to Reacher fans than watching this garbage. Tom Cruise is a good action star but the writing and direction are so bad in this movie that you just can't overlook tiny Tom Cruise being huge Jack Reacher.

Yes I am a Lee Child/Reacher fan and yes I have read all the books. I am not a nitpicker though. I understand that for editing and thematic purposes a book is butchered from time to time for the sake of creating a script - this movie simply represents a poor job of it.
I watched the film last night and woke up with no clear memories about the film so I watched it again to see if I was missing something.
From beginning to end too much of the details of the story are tossed out. The film opens up with no explanation of why Reacher is in a diner, where the diner is and how he knows Major Turner. Most of the information is implied by incoherent flashbacks that also don't add any details.
I would say incoherent is the operative term throughout. Each scene was like being 35 minutes late t the film and walking in an sitting down and watching it anyways. The minute you figure out what is going on, its already a few scenes later.
Reacher was charged with two crimes in the book, and assigned two lawyers. Neither of the crimes was much more than a back story to the main plot, and certainly not the daughter, but these facts are important because it explains why he is operating the way he does. The reason for drafting Reacher back into the Army is not fleshed out and his time confined to the base are completely glossed over.
All the military officers in the movie are far too compliant and give up classified and/or privileged information without putting up any kind of fight or demanding a reasonable explanation.
Major Turner is scripted as some sort of helpless whiny side kick.
There is action, but it doesn't fit in well with the story, it is also incoherent and not well explained and seemed perfunctory as apposed to essential. Again, I saw it last night, and I woke up trying to remember is there was any action, or was it just Reacher on the run with Turner and a teenager?
It was like watching a bad Paul Greengrass film minus the shaky camera work. Frenetic, and unconnected. Much like the film Alex Cross had nothing to do with the book I, Alex Cross; Never Go Back has little to do with the Jack Reacher novels.
All this would be somewhat acceptable if it were a decent action film, but it is not even that.
Therefore I feel I have no choice to but say its just a bad film. Sorry.

25 October 2016 Film of Choice at The Plaza Dorchester This Afternoon - Jack Reacher Never Go Back. Tom Cruise returns in the title role and plays the hero part with aplomb. The film begins, continues and ends with action and intrigue. In this outing Reacher has to uncover a government conspiracy to clear his name and that of a colleague. A complicated plot entwines itself around the characters and it takes a little concentration not to get lost. There is however a rather refreshing chase scene that doesn't involve a single car. Highly watchable but not as good as the first film. Always easy to watch Tom Cruise when he's strutting his stuff, whatever the plot.
