Since Jordan Peeled created "Get Out" there are more and more of these racially charged thriller / horror projects emerging and none of them come close to being as good as Peele's project. I am a huge Regina Hall fan, but this movie was straight up weird and failed to hit the mark for me.

This Is My Second Review Of The Movie Master, I Have No Idea What Happened To My First But There's a War Going On So Why Be Concerned About a Review...Before Watching This I Read The Positive And Negative, So I Really Didn't Know What To Expect, But I Can Tell You This Movie Is Worth More Than The One Star Ratings I Seen And Read, So To Make Up For It I Gave It 10 Of Those Stars Which Really It Is a 7 Star, If You Weren't Born Way Before The Civil War, racism And Extreme Prejudice Was Here Before You Were Born Here And racism And Extreme Prejudice Will Be Here When You're Not Here!

This film start with a woman "Gail" move to her place to work, and another woman "Jasmine" arrive at her place to study scene! As turnout, this film is about Gail, and Jasmine need to dealing with the ghost they saw in their place, and eventually Jasmine took her own life for her experience! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the jump scare scene, overuse of the dreaming scene, overuse of the song playing at the background scene, overuse of the drinking scene, and overuse of the trial scene! Make the film unwatchable! At the end, Gail quit her job after the death of Jasmine! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

Master does a good job of keeping tension and suspense throughout the whole movie, however, there isn't a single payoff at the end. Is the college haunted? Is there is a slasher on campus? Is it trolls trying to stir up hate on school grounds? These are just some questions I had while watching, but none of them were answered. Furthermore, the movie tries to touch on contemporary topics of racism on college campuses but fails to say anything critical that would provide closure to the audience. "Racism is bad" is not enough to satisfy today's audiences. Additionally, the motivations and characterizations are the weakest links in Master. Editing is also questionable at times, with characters experiencing events that could be best described as spontaneous without any real explanations. Is it supernatural? Is it psychological distress? Has someone cast a spell on the main characters? None of these are addressed. Instead, the movie just strolls through the story with an ending that left me in disbelief. I felt as though there should've been a satisfying reward at the end for sticking through the whole movie, like perhaps what I expected or subverting those very expectations, but poof, there's nothing! The actors were committed to a script that some might find too on-the-nose but did convey enough to move the story. I'll admit the cinematography looks very professional, with good lighting, ergo The Social Network. In conclusion, Master should keep you in your seat with an interesting story and questionable characterization, but a lack of reward at the end will leave no one satisfied.

The Master is definitely one of the better films of 2022. Instead of relying on the usual blood and gore, it takes a more supernatural route to tell a suspenseful story of racism and who belongs where. Regina Hall is excellent as Gail Bishop, the newly appointed Master of a prestigious university in New England. Zoe Renee as Jasmine Moore is excellent as the young student who is assigned the notorious dorm room 302 and begins to have nightmares and visions of a woman accused of witchcraft, Margaret Millett. She later finds out that another student of colour, Lousie Weeks hung herself in the same room in 1965. Jasmine also starts to experience racist attacks, a noose and a warning telling her to leave carved into her door, a cross burning, and a presence that causes her to fall out of the window of her room. She also believes that as Liv Beckman, a teacher up for tenure played wonderfully by Amber Gray is deliberately giving her bad grades so she lodges a complaint that puts, Beckman's bid for tenure into jeopardy. This is an excellent look at the way people of colour and women can be othered and even gaslit in institutions that do not welcome them. How racism and sexism can be so ingrained that it can be normalised. All this is examined while giving us a genuinely scary and suspenseful movie. This is one to watch and enjoy if you are looking for something deeper than your usual stalk and slash.

If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free thoughts, please follow my blog to read my full review :) "Master holds one of the most purposeful, insightful, thought-provoking Black stories of the festival. Mariama Diallo's directorial debut boasts an intriguing narrative filled with impactful social commentary on racism and white supremacy, "disguising" them with a terrifying, supernatural evil force surrounded by a powerful score and creepy cinematography. Regina Hall delivers an impressive performance, as does Zoe Renee, but the former truly shines in the lead role. Amber Gray's character could have been better explored, as well as some secondary themes, which result in a loss of focus around the mid-section. Nevertheless, the well-written script offers an informative point-of-view, allowing the viewers to feel the discrimination that the main characters suffer without ever making it a forced plot point. The final scene with the end credits already rolling is a perfect conclusion to demonstrate the cultural and behavioral differences towards and between each race." Rating: B+

Et in the imposing halls of Ancaster College, a prestigious northeastern institution so exclusive it counts itself above Harvard (even FDR had a hard time getting in), "Master" coats the present-day school in the lingering air of the Salem witch trials. Centuries earlier a woman by the name of Margaret Millett was hanged there for witchcraft. School folklore now says that every year her ghost picks one freshman and, on the anniversary of her death at 3:33am, takes the unlucky soul with her.
