I'm currently binge watching all the Dragon Ball films with Broly in them to celebrate the 1 year birthday of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This is the first of the four-movie set, and by far one of the best Dragon Ball Z movies. At the start of the movie, we are introduced to Paragus, who warns Vegeta of the Legendary Super Saiyan and persuades him to rule New Planet Vegeta. Goku is also warned of the threat by King Kai, and Goku, being the guy who likes strong opponents, sets out to find him. Shockingly enough, after a duel between titans, Goku later finds out that Broly, his neighbor in the maternity ward, is the Legendary Super Saiyan. What follows is one of the longest battles in the Dragon Ball franchise, and Vegeta going through a mid-life crisis. I like how Takao Koyama and Akira Toriyama both made this Broly a force to be reckoned with, and the Legendary Super Saiyan transformation that Broly undertakes is so incredible, and to me, it was the highlight of the movie. The trailer to this movie is incredible as well. In fact, this movie gained so much popularity, it spawned two sequels: Broly - Second Coming, and the infamous Bio-Broly. I'd recommend watching the Broly films in this order: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly - Second Coming, Bio-Broly, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This movie is battles, humor, and action galore in both Japanese and Funimation dubs alike, but I'd recommend watching this in the Funimation dub. The rock music from Haji's Kitchen in the final battle between two very strong warriors born on the same day as the other doesn't fail to disappoint. Sure, the final fight is ended in only one punch (Goku was Saitama before One Punch Man was a thing, people), but two childhood rivals duking it out to see who was stronger never fails to get my Saiyan pride kicking in.

This was a movie that wasn't readily available back when I was first watching DBZ. The only DBZ movies that Toonami would air were the first three. I only ever saw glimpses of "Broly" through different YouTube AMV's and it looked awesome. Broly was this monster of a Sayian, he towered over our heroes and was looked like a real imposing figure. The premise sounded epic. The "Legendary Super Saiyan", you mean like that one Vegeta mentioned on Namek in the series? That helps give this movie a bit more substance than it just being a new villain they make up, there is some connection rooted in actual DBZ lore. Then, after many years, I finally tracked down a copy and watched the film for myself. And it was...underwhelming. First off, most translations of the is movie title refer to it as "Broly: Legendary Super Saiyan", so the whole mystery they try to build up of who the villain is, is pretty stupid. I'm positive nobody watching the movie is scratching their head wondering, "gee, who could the legendary super saiyan be?" But yet the movie drags out the reveal intil about 40 minutes into the movie. Once we get to that point, Vegeta becomes completely useless in the story. And in a real out of character move from him. Vegeta seems to have a "can't win don't try" mentality that has never been seen before or since. This movie does not shine him in a good light, he literally has to be carried to the fight, people begging him to help out. And sadly, Broly is also not an interesting character. He is big and strong and has a cool concept. But his motivation and back story make no sense, and once he starts fighting, he is the very definition of a one note character. And like many of these movies the ending comes very abruptly with the while build up to it feeling unearned. With all those negatives being said, I do like the setting of Planet: "New Vegeta". The movie brought all its coolest toys to the playground, we have Krillin, Piccolo, Trunks, Vegeta, Gohan and Goku all in powerful form. And the fight between Broly and all the participating fighters has a lot of really cool moments. Didn't live up to the hype, but it was an OK entry. Not quite Legendary, but Broly's best and worst are still yet to come in later movies.

this is definatly one of the two best dbz movies tied only with the fusion movie....the only thing that keeps it from being the hands down best is the fact that vegeta is compleatly out of character for much of the movie's important bits....

One of the better DBZ movies and one of the most memorable characters. There are some minor problems with the story, but overall I think it works fine, though the plan does seem a bit strange. The story actually gets a lot darker than any of the other movies. They shove in some unneeded comedy bits, which kind of take away from some more serious moments, but maybe they felt it was needed to balance the tone. You have a sympathetic backstory, yet the characters went on to do such terrible things they themselves aren't really redeemable. There's a good amount of action, and you see an enemy that's just completely overpowered. He's almost like a slasher villain. Thankfully not too much time is spent on extra characters, and what is shown is actually relevant to the plot and enjoyable enough. I like the little bird babies. This is completely separate from the dragon ball super Broly character and universe or timeline. It is connected to the second and third Broly movies DBZ Movie 10: Broly Second Coming and DBZ Movie 11: Bio-Broly but they're terrible. I would only recommend watching this and the DBS movie.

Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan feels less like a movie, and more like a short, but amazing saga from the normal Dragon Ball Z. I felt like the movie had some great characters, and easily one of the greatest villains the series has ever seen. I honestly would have loved to see a saga for Broly himself, as he could have been an even better villain, but the movie still does an excellent job. The voice acting, animation, and action scenes maintain the same high quality level as the show. The only real criticism I think I can give is the ending that seemed a little lack luster for me, but it still wraps up in a decent fashion, and I don't think I would have been able to write a better ending anyway. All in all, any negatives are vastly overshadowed by the rest of the movie, and well worth a watch for any DBZ fan.

Dragon Ball has always promised us a few things: great fight scenes, a hungry protagonist, evil villains and hilarious sub-plots/filler. This movie, for me, captures basically all of these. The movie starts with Chi-Chi trying to put on a good impression for a school she wants Gohan to get into. Seeing Goku in a suit trying to pass off reading as one of his hobbies is hilarious enough, but seeing Krillin try and do karaoke is the icing on the cake! When we are finally greeted with the main plot of this movie, we are introduced to Broly and his father. They attempt to convince Vegeta that they are trying to resurrect a new planet Vegeta and want him to be their bountiful master. They take him and a bunch of the other Z-fighters with them. However, they tell him of a legendary super saiyan who needs to be dealt with. Of course, with a movie title like "Broly - the legendary super saiyan" I think its no spoiler that Broly is that person! When Goku arrives things finally kick off and Broly is unleashed. Broly was born with a power level "over 9000 (or 8000 if you watch the series in Japanese)!!" and he hates Goku...why? Well, in true DBZ style, the reason is hilarious. I won't spoil it, but it will make you chuckle. For those who say the reason is stupid, I urge you to remember what you are watching... The fight scenes that follow are nothing short of incredible. It is some of the best action I have ever seen in Dragon Ball. Super saiyans are here, there and EVERYWHERE. Ki-blasts are flying, punches are being thrown and environments are being pummelled. It is great stuff and I am sure if you enjoy classic Dragon Ball Z, you will enjoy this. The finale is great because it incorporates a sense of teamwork, despite Vegeta's reservation to act for anyone but himself! All in all, this is a great Dragon Ball movie. It is my personal favourite and I highly recommend you watch it. If you are new to the world of Dragon Ball, I recommend that you watch the series first, because it will flow better. Enjoy!!
