इतिहास

The story of RMS Titanic has been told in grand style many times: the monumental unsinkable ship, the scarcely-believable hubris of its owners and the dreadful events of 1912. Waking the Titanic is something new a living history told on a small, but no less poignant human scale. Fourteen young people - ranging in age from 17 to 32 - from the poor community of Addergoole in county Mayo set about making plans to emigrate. Through stylised re-enactments, the docudrama recreates a joyous trip to the next town to buy a new hat for the voyage because the ladies of America are well-dressed ; the wedding of a young couple prior to the voyage; the young shop girl measuring a child s finger with a piece of string so she could send a ring back to her from the States; the brother reading his sister s tealeaves, and warning her not to get on the boat; a fare sent from America that was spent on a new cow, thereby saving a life, and the day that fourteen excited people left the only world they knew in search of a dream. Focusing on the drama of anticipation prior to the fateful voyage the story of the Addergoole 14 and what happened to them on the Titanic is told using detailed accounts handed down to family members from the people of the time and interviews with the descendents of those who survived. This is no mere retelling of the Titanic story. This is a unique account of hope and the loss suffered by the people of a tiny west of Ireland village whose sons and daughters went in search of a better life only to be subsumed by the tragic destiny of the world s greatest ship. Only 3 of the party of 14 survived the sinking. Across the Atlantic, the story also abides embodied in the lives of 96 direct descendents of the survivors whose voices provide both the core and the epilogue to this tale.

The Irish emigrants were portrayed were with perfect hair, clean nails, clean, perfectly ironed clothes etc. At this time the poor in Ireland had almost nothing, they washed in a bowl, probably with cold water, probably very rarely! There is no way that the women's hair we saw, beautifully coiffured could ever be achieved. The images we saw were far too "perfect", with the only reflection on reality was the burning of peat, and even that was done in a clinical environment! This appears to have been produced by people who had no idea of the conditions in Ireland at that time. What a shame, could have been an interesting historical document.

I stumbled upon the 2013 documentary "Waking the Titanic" here in 2023 by random chance. And with my interest in the ship and the tragedy that befell her, of course I opted to sit down to watch this 2013 documentary that I had never even heard about. Director Frank Delaney delivered a documentary that was somewhat of a niche viewing. While it hardly delves into the events around the disaster itself, it focuses on the story of 14 travelers from a small Irish community that set out to immigrate to the USA. So this was more of a local documentary with focus on that small group of people. Sure, it shed some light on events that I wasn't familiar with prior to watching this documentary, and putting the community within the spot light now. While "Waking the Titanic" was watchable, it was hardly among the best of documentaries to revolve around The Titanic and the events that led to her sinking. My rating of "Waking the Titanic" lands on a five out of ten stars.

This tragic story is based on the small Irish village and the 14 people that went on the unfortunate trip that cost their lives, in search of a better life in the United States. Only 3 people survived, and their story is shown throughout this interesting documentary. It starts with the story how they were they were living in poverty and how their only option was to migrate to the US and do start a new chapter in their lives. The people who were left in Ireland were so devastated by the tragedy, that they simply refused to talk about it. After a century, they dared to tell the story that cannot be thought of, but it is always hoped to never repeat it again.
