Don't get me wrong, it's a cheesy 90s action comedy. But it's a great cheesy 90s action comedy. You got Christian Slater of Heathers, playing the snarky, irresponsible, but lovable George Kuffs. He finds out his girlfriend Maya (Played by future RE Star Milla Jovovich) is pregnant and leaves her to find a way to get some money from his more responsible Patrol Special brother Brad (Played by Tron himself Bruce Boxleitner). While the latter is not too happy about the former's slacker routine, he obliges only for tragedy to strike when he is gunned down by an assailant. George finds out he inherited his brother's district and rather than sell it, he decides to run it, using the resources available to him to find his brother's killer. Upon training he is assigned to Ted (Tony Goldwyn of Ghost), an SFPD officer tasked to showing him the ropes. It's a movie of thrills, spills and bleeped out cursing and it's worth the watch.

Christian Slater continues with his low rent Jack Nicholson impersonation in the dismal Kuffs. A film that tonally is all over the place not sure whether it is a buddy cop drama, a comedy or a violent thriller. At one point it is a buddy dog/cop film. Slater plays George Kuffs, a slacker usually borrowing money from his brother Brad a private patrol man who owns a district in San Francisco and patrols it for its citizens who pay him for protection. When Brad is killed by a violent gang gang member, George decides to continue with the security firm even though there are people willing to buy the district from him and George has no experience in keeping the citizens safe. As in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Slater constantly gives his thoughts to the camera. Harold Faltermeyer's 1980s tinged soundtrack just reminds you that this film was passed over by Eddie Murphy as it has hints of Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours. The script is just dreadful despite Slater trying to be show an appealing persona. Some of the action sequences are poorly staged varying from being violent to then being comic as well as being absurd. Like Slater when he has his shirt off, This is just lightweight fluff that shows some interesting shots of San Francisco which is the best that can be said of this movie.

"Kuffs" is another movie from the 90's that tries very hard to be as charming and fun. The movie obviously aims at the audience that was raised on the 80's. They even haired Harold Faltermeyer (famous for "Beverly hills cop" soundtrack) to give the 80's feel to "Kuffs". Faltermeyer's music here is unfortunately a shadow of his best work ("Axel F") , just like "Kuffs" is a shadow of a really good action comedy. There are some interesting things here. The idea of districts and private police is refreshing. The fact that movie obviously breaks the fourth wall is also something you don't see too often. Unfortunately , the movie quickly becomes a routine one –of-many-action-comedies. Christian Slater is really likable and pretty much carries the whole movie on his own. I feel sorry that the writers weren't able to give him some really dialogues and witty one liners. Why have Kuffs break the fourth wall if he doesn't have any interesting thing to say ? A waste of good idea. The other characters seems interesting at first , but the movie never gives them enough screen time and the screenplay doesn't give them a lot to do. The story itself is a lame story about evil businessman which was done before and with a better result. The action scenes are forgettable and the movie has only small moments of good humor ( Slater fighting for life in his apartment). For action or comedy junkies only. I give it 2/10.

Christian Slater plays a man who inherits a police district from his older brother who was gunned down , played by Bruce Boxleitner. apparently San Francisco didn't have enough police,, so there was like citizen patrols broken up into districts is how it was explained in the movie,, so he takes over the district , and trouble follows him everywhere, he has to be trained by his peers because he has no law enforcement experience,, his girlfriend is Milla Jovovich,, really young in this movie. Lots of chases,, funny one liners,, car chases, pretty funny movie,, it's slightly above average,, not Christian's greatest work,, but definitely watchable,, and full of laughs.

This is one of the best action-comedy movies that I have ever seen. The movie is full of hilarious one-liners, and action too. The plot is very original, not like a scheme I have ever seen in a cop film before. Don't watch this movie expecting it to be like Lethal Weapon, this isn't a film to be taken seriously. It's about a young, renegade 20-year old who takes over a special police unit after his brother, who ran the unit, was killed. This is a good action-comedy that will keep you laughing through the whole film. And Milla Jovovich is in it to boot...yeah, I'm a guy, sue me.

"Kuffs" is a fun, slick action-comedy that you just appreciate for what it is. It doesn't even make an attempt to be a landmark cop movie like "48 Hours" or "Lethal Weapon," and that's what it makes it work. It's tongue-in-cheek and completely unpretentious. And Christian Slater is the glue that holds this film together. He's one of my favorite actors (who's quite underrated) and it's his credible, charming, charismatic performance that really makes this film tick. Though this is not one of his serious character roles, he seems to be having a lot of fun and really entertains us with his effervescent presence. The moment you see Slater talking to the camera in the opening scene, you know this is not a movie to be taken seriously. In fact, this can even be classified as a farce. The material doesn't always seem suited for the big screen (more for the small screen in a TV cop show), but big screen or not it's damn entertaining. My only criticisms are a few cartoonish scenes which are just plain silly, one being Tony Goldwyn drinking coffee spiked with narcotics and stomping around like a Looney Tunes character. Milla Jovovich is beautiful to look at, the humor is often fresh and funny, Slater is very entertaining and there's some exciting action to boot. Sounds good? It does to me. My score: 7 (out of 10)
