this film has it all. i think what truly makes it work is that it speaks to that part of all of us that know what the taboos in society are and push the limit anyway and take risks. This film is all about the consequences of taking risks and the price we all pay in the end in the form of tragedy of unimaginable magnitude. I have watched it a couple of times, and I identify with the character of Anna the most. She is perhaps the most tragic of all characters in the film because, while she is a homewrecker, she seems driven to do it as some form of compensation for what she has been through in her own life. Hence the name of the film...I think the title is more about her personal "damage" than the damage she inflicts on the lives of others. I would like this film on DVD to add to my collection. Its stunning.

From the very beginning they are drawn to each other. "Something" at first sight. If this was not to happen, one of them would look away. An unknown need is present. The Juliet Binoche character has been through an experience of damage. If she is at all appealing, and she is, she could use saving. The Jeremy Irons character must sense this. It's up to us to determine what there is about Jeremy needing saving. There is a strong desire to save the opposite sex if one needs saving themselves. This is a requirement which must be met at all costs. I think that is the theme of this film. It is very well acted. Be careful if you are going to try and save someone that you know what you are doing lest you end up damaging yourself and all around you.

Greek tragedy of the first order. Mesmerizing eroticism from Irons and Binoche and throat tightening despair from Miranda Richardson who ends up stealing the show with her performance. Binoche plays the damaged individual of the title; a young woman with a Narcissistic Personality Disorder searching to recapture the adolescent hour before tragedy struck her down.

A brilliant examination of the psychological forces that drive people to perform acts of personal destruction. An affair between a father and his prospective daughter in law is driven by her past sexual abuse by her brother and his long term sense of losing a rivalry to his son for his wife's affections.

This film had me laughing out loud within the first 15 minutes. The scant character development and marginal pretense for risking everything and jumping in the sack is some of the most laughable sequences of scenes I have ever seen. But I suppose if we spent too much time on the details at the beginning we would take a lot of time getting to the end of the film. The fatal flaws in the script doom this film throughout. Such as you begin badly, you cannot hope but to end badly. I give it a five stars. The sheer audacity to commit this script to film and somehow convince other people that this is "emotionally captivating" and a "masterpiece of unbridled passion" is a feat few film producers can do.
