Remember that movie "Powder" from the 90s? The hairless albino kid with electric powers found after his caregiver died? This is a derivative copy of that movie with some Bollywood flair thrown in. They did try to change it up with the addition of an evil scientist, but the movie was the same. Right down to the weird hat that Powder wore. Props for trying to add a love interest though. Although it is very unlikely that a woman that good looking was single in the first place! Even more unlikely that she falls in love with this guy in less than a couple of weeks! Try harder!
It's like they didn't even try.

One must appreciate the courage of the new lot on being experimental. Take the case of "Alag", which attempts to strays away from the regular Bollywood ishtyle. The story is novel, screenplay is great and performances okay. The story-telling format keeps you glued especially in the initial 30-minutes. The CGI have been used appropriately and is of good quality. Screenplay is good.
Akshay Kapoor gives his best shot to get into the skin of "Tejas/Alag" and fares remarkably well, considering he is next to a new-comer. Diya Mirza carries herself very well and delivers her lines at ease. Tom Alter does a good job of a obsessed scientist.

To begin with, I am sure the project looked indeed different at the conceptualisation stages,- but amidst execution it succumbed into the trap of regular Bollywood fare.
The movie resembles a comic-book as the basic premise is about super-powers. The concept should go down well with the kids, however two things work against it - a few scary moments in the movie and the romantic track.
The romantic angle lacks depth and hence it should have either been given more depth or avoided completely. The songs which I am sure have been suggested by God-knows-who is a bad idea.
Also the idea of keeping son locked in the house for 18-years by the father is slightly illogical. Tejas character gets etchy at times - saviour, punisher, dancer, lover, singer, scared, avenger, magician, compassionate!!!! As mentioned earlier the first 30-minutes are good and then the story loses momentum.
Jayanth Kriplani is loud. Beena is wasted.
Overall - the positioning is wrong neither appealing to kids nor adults.
PS: And if the movie is a copy of "Powder" as a few claim, then Mr. Director you should change the title aptly "Alag Hollywood Copy"

This is not so much of a spoiler as an agreement to the reviewer from the UAE (where I have come back from a holiday), but both in story and style, this movie is an almost direct copy of 1995's POWDER. You could almost have dubbed the original in Hindi for the same effect! Perhaps the only difference is the Bollywood "dance" scene in the middle of it, so aptly parodied in the Simpson's episode when Homer rents the Bolly version of PAINT YOUR WAGON and is shocked when the characters break into a dance halfway through a tense moment.
Anyway, I think it's fairly well known that whenever a movie is made in the USA, Bollywood will copy it later (I hear there is a Bollywood version of THE MATRIX floating around).
But as an enjoyable movie for a long haul flight from Melbourne and Dubai, this one ate up a couple of sudsy, tragi-comic hours.

Mostly I watched this movie just to see SRK because he is my favorite and I collect his movies. Of course, I was disappointed in that the cameo appearance of him was only parts of a song he sang at the end, and more disappointing, his shots were only head shots and they were mixed in with the other cameos...whom I also like a lot. The previous reviews cover the movie adequately. My comment is that I'm upset because the ending of the movie is not what the Wikipedia article says it is. I was really counting on the movie living up to the Wikipedia article. If there are two "different" versions of Alag that were produced and released for sale, then that info should be posted when you try to buy the DVD. If there is only one version, then someone needs to edit the wiki article. 😠😤😠😤 Had I known that there are two versions, if there are indeed two versions, I would have tried to purchase both. Phooey!!!

this is copy of -Powder -Which was released in 1995 Hollywood , It did not do well at box office And its high time Indian directors and producers should get sued to copy other people work and get away with it ,how are we allowing them to laugh to the bank with poor audiences hard earned money, The only Indian director who has guts to mention was where he says Sarkar inspired from god father. the special effects /actors getup story a total copy , this is total waste of money ,check out powder which came out in 1995 if you don't believe me , if your shop don't sell it search the net to see or even this site .donot watch this movie ,stop copying Hollywood movies/ Indian directors need to go to court .

As the name suggests this is a different kind of movie. This movie is in a different league than all others. Perhaps that was the reason why the movie was a flop too. Interestingly whenever there is a movie that is different, it has failed to capture audiences.
The protagonist in the movie is also different. He is different from the rest of the world. He is different from normal human beings.
I had tried to watch the movie three times but every time I managed to watch only a part of the movie. Finally, it was only last night I saw the movie in some cable channel in Patna. A lot of scenes in the movie fascinated me.
Tejas is born to a family whose parents died suddenly. He has been rescued by the Police & been handed over to a Doctor(Jayant Kripalani). He is very sensitive to light. Slowly Tejas proves that he has got a very powerful brain and can do wonders with that. He cures the doctor's wife (Beena) from Coma. The doctor becomes fond of him but then a lot of other Doctors become curious to know the power behind what he does. They want to make him a part of their experiment. When this is refused by the Doctor (Jayant Kripalani), he is kidnapped by Dr. Dyer the Scientist. Dr. Dyer wants to manipulate his mind to his own advantage. Tejas frees himself & use his powers to kill Dr. Dyer.

ALAG - A specially gifted child spent 18 yrs of his life in the basement of his home. Sheltered from sunlight and the rest of the world. His father believed that he will be safe there and the world will also be safer from him. The boy's supernatural power will always make him different. When his father died, his life begins. Forced to live in the real world where life is a masala of good and evil, of truth and lies, of suffering and pain with a dash of greed, a handful of sickness and a good serving of love. Everything he knows are direct extracts from pages of books. He knows himself, he knows the truth about his powers but the world is not ready for it. Alone in the basement, books are his only link to the outside world. Then he discovers love...... this changed the equation quite a bit. This new comer Akshay Kapoor will give Hritik Roshan a run for his money. Give him a few more material to work with and he will grow into a better actor given time. He looks good, he's got the body, he's got moves and to top it all off....... The guy can act!!! Hritik will have competition at last. There is a certain Vin Diesel effect to this guy !!

I always like movies with actors/actresses who are not famous and who have to prove themselves to be worthy in a bollywood movie. I really liked Akshay Kapoor as an actor. He is like all the other male Kapoor's; a born natural actor. Alag is a sort of super hero movie. It is about a bald boy who cannot stand the light and has to stay inside the house his whole life. He is very smart and has some super powers. Then his father dies and he has to face the world on his own.
The story is not new, but for bollywood a nice try to make a super hero movie. When you put a good new actor like Akshay in a movie with bad actors like Diya Mirza or the man who plays her father. For instance, her father is the head of the school where Akshay (Tejas, what a stupid name!) goes. Tejas does some stupid things because of his powers. The head of the school is in important man, no one can meet him. But Tejas can! He tries to tell Tejas not to do such things and not always to tell the truth, but first to think what to say. Tejas doesn't like this, he wants to tell the truth always. Tejas is very angry. Then Diya Mirza tries to explain her father is hurt and she takes Tejas to the hospital to let him see that her mother is in coma. When a man is important, not every one can just come into the room and listen what he is saying, because at the point Tejas is seeing Diya's father in hurt, her father cries near the bed of his wife talking about Tejas! How unrealistic, like the whole world has been turning around Tejas already.
At that point you already know Tejas is going to make his wife better, so that was predictable. As sudden Tejas is dreaming about moments he has hair. Then you see a man dancing. I don't know if this was Akshay also, but if he was it really is a different look! Akshay was not suited for this role. This because Akshay is very muscular. When Akshay takes of his shirt, I don't see a boy who has been at home behind the books for 18 years, but I see a man who has been in the gym every day! Then you have a really good actor in the movie like Sharat Saxena. Then he has to be a police man AGAIN! It is so boring, this man can do so much more, he has been a police man for ever. His role is very small, unfortunately.
The movie was worth seeing, special effects were great. Acting of the small actors and actresses was boring and not realistic. Story was predictable. It was a little bit stolen from The green mile. If Diya Mirza had been alive at the end of the movie, there could have been an Alag sequel with their son to be a masked super hero like Krrish HA HA!
The special appearances at the end was a surprise, but was it necessary? No it wasn't. It was an expensive way to put a lot of Bollywood character into the movie in just one song. That was not a cherry on the ice-cream. On the contrary, Alag was about to be a movie on itself like Krrish. A good movie without the stupid actors like Sharukh and Preity Zinta. It was about to become a rocket from an airplane. But with the stupid famous actors and actresses in the last song is was a rocket who had to crash back on earth. A pity.
