This is a very European film in the best possible sense. Timothy Spall and Peter Stormare, two of the greatest character actors of their generation (and woefully unsung underdog heroes) put in thoroughly entertaining performances, as choleric genius architect Alfred Rott and the enigmatic Grand Duke, respectively. The writing is terrific. Sharp wit, excellent pace and subversion of your expectations at every turn. This is not the film that you think it is going to be by looking at the poster and watching the trailer and it's all the better for it. Also, the story is about 90% true :)

Definitely special, but not definitely great. However I must say that I was mesmirized at the start of this quirky story about a really famous and really obnoxioius and blunt architect, who visits an island with some very strange rich characters. The bad: the very weird story and characters could not keep me interested any longer than half an hour. Not suited for those without patience for bizarre stories. Probably only suited for an arthouse audience. The good: the acting is great, the story is bizarre, yet kinda mesmirizing (up to a point...)

If you like good writing, witty satire and sophisticated humor you will love this film. Acting is great, location is wonderful and historical references are relevant. This film never looses it's comic approach and get too serious. Don't expect a plot and get involve in characters and humor of it.

Very Satisfying and beautiful movie with a great ending. The Grand Duke who laughs and coughs in the face of certain doom and the real world here and now similarities. Great acting and radical dialogue and sexual maturity with a reckless perception of what next when we die ? Run or stay ? Daniels films so far have a graven theme yet beautiful camera work and photography saturating the viewer with warmth and light ? Above all things this movie has a very dignified and satisfying ending that is missing in many films these days therefore making it a nice "one-shot" type movie with a typically described art house rarefied feel. 8/10.
