IN A NUTSHELL: This is the debut for both the director, Charlotte Regan, and her leading young lady, Lola Campbell. They both did a great job! Already, the film has been nominated for various awards and won Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival! THINGS I LIKED: Lola Campbell is brilliant, as the British like to say. She's a true natural. One thing that's interesting about her character is that she wears a hearing aid, yet it's never mentioned in the story. It's a subtle way of showing that handicaps don't have to define us. I searched online but couldn't verify whether or not Lola wears a hearing aid in real life or if it was just part of the character's life. Cast members will be mostly unfamiliar to American viewers: Lola Campbell, Alin Uzun, Ambreen Razia, Oliva Brady, and Aylin Tezel. The face you'll probably recognize is that of Harris Dickinson, whom you might recognize from Triangle of Sadness or See How They Run The magic of the storytelling is the chemistry between father and daughter who both struggle in various ways and discover the power of family, even if it is dysfunctional. The humor is subtle and quirky. The color palette is bright, despite the characters' gloomy financial prospects. It makes the movie look almost like a modern-day fairy tale. Occasionally, there are random clips inserted inside scenes. Some have compared that style to that of popular Wes Anderson. THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: So many big, icky spiders in the movie! EEK! Some viewers may find it difficult to understand the thick accents. The plot seems a bit unrealistic. TIPS FOR PARENTS: A young girl lives alone after her single mother dies A girl steals bikes to earn money Some profanity A girl hits another girl and knocks her down on the ground. .

My cousins act better than any lead in this 'thing'. My HR manager write better story on payslips, and better dialogs, during weekly stand up. I stopped watching after the first scene, little girl explaining bigger girl - while trying to steal her bicycle, that what they were doing, was assessing road worthiness of their bikes... Obviously. The authors never biked anything in their lives, or for the sake of an argument lived in a place with higher population than 100 people. How the hell, do you pump money into something as ludicrous as this? I guess BBC, doesn't have to do due diligence, as long as you know 'someone'.

After attending SFF for many years the quality of movies offered has steadily declined. With this film getting the Grand Jury Prize the festival is now officially a thing of the past. I have seen good bad and ugly movies at Sundance but this one takes the award for the worst movie and a complete waste of time. The box office receipts are the first clue. The movie made nothing for whoever produced it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS PIG!!!! The plot is vague and the screenplay seems to have been written by a high school drop out. Oh and for American Audiences be forewarned that the thick British dialog is unintelligible over half the time.

You can tell "Scrapper" is heartfelt, and it has what could have been a heart tugging premise if it had been better made. But the movie is anemic and undercooked. It doesn't build out characters enough for you to feel any of the things the movie clearly wants you to be feeling about them. It also doesn't help that there's not a lot of rooting interest in these people. The dad played by Harrison Dickinson is kind of a jerk, and I think we're supposed to see that he's grown by the time the movie's over and see is reentry into his daughter's life as a good thing. But he remains a jerk, and doesn't grow, and encourages his daughter to steal bikes and get away with assaulting other kids. The happy ending this movie forces on us didn't feel all that happy to me. I've known dead beat dads in real life, and the movie was more convinced than I was that this guy was going to stop being a dead beat. Grade: C.
