Why is Pacino such a beast acting? I'll tell you why. His passion. Passion that overwhelms all surrounding him. His voice starts roaring and he forgets that he is Al Pacino. He suddenly becomes his character, he stops seeing around him and he is now a prisoner in his role.
The movie is about Pacino. His acting is grand, superb, majestic, heart-wrenching, deep, emotional, so forth. His portrayal of a blind man dangling in the rope of his life, is not only credible but immensely touching. We see directly, through his crystalline performance all of the pain that griefs on his character. Any other actor would have given a corny, over the top performance. Pacino is the Ace.
Chris O' Donnell gives also a fantastic performance, shy and unsure will start to understand Colonel Frank Slade in a short trip that will change their future lives. This movie is not Hollywood Rubish. Martin Brest directs a movie that hits no cheap feelings and floods on great emotions that immediately contact the viewer. You have to be rock solid to not be touched.
A masterpiece, one of the best studies on man's desperation, helped by wonderful performances and and a stirring, poignant script, with no wasted lines. You will raise goosebumps with scenes like the tango scene, you will laugh, you will cry, you will feel empathy, sorrow, anger. Isn't this movie the Holy Grail of Emotions.
Don't miss it. One of a kind.

Isn't it about time people reassessed this 1992 film and Al Pacino's Oscar winning performance? If they did, I think the academy would ask Al for his Oscar back. He is so way, way over the top as Lt. Col Frank Slade its embarrassing. His performance is just hard to watch as he sucks all the air out of the room.
Unfortunately, by giving Pacino an overdue Oscar for this, it only encouraged him to be bigger and broader in his subsequent performances, in my opinion ruining his career. He seems to have lost all touch with subtly and it began right here.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Chris O'Donnell, at the early part of their careers probably learned a lot by watching Pacino as they co-starred in this--what NOT to do on the big screen.

I do not care if anyone says that The Godfather is Pacino's film! His character was full of integrity! Granted he was blind, Frank Slade was still very perceptive on Life. O'Donnell's character was sappy at first but, Pacino taught him a few lessons on standing up for himself against all his rich snotty colleagues. The film has great characterizations especially those of Pacino and O'Donnell. I quite fancy that famous "hoo-ah"! ha ha ha ha! The best scene was the Baird courtroom scene in which he tells off that snob master James Rebhorn. Another good scene is the tango and the scene in which Pacino tries to do away with himself that was very powerful and extremely eloquent!

Sometimes brilliant but sometimes a bit cheesy (I'm referring to the end that seem to be some left-over scene from Dead Poet's Society). Pacino is just glorious in this film, and they couldn't have picked a better actor then O'Donnell for the part of Simms: he looks like he's to weak to pull wings off a fly.
Very good, but they could've omitted the last part all together. It's not really relevant.

This is one of those movies that cannot be judged or rated. They are just too good for that. Instead you should experience them yourself and admire the elegant beauty, grace, creativity and passion that has created this piece of art. Al pachino will be one of the most great actors the world has and will ever see. It also acts as a beautiful time Machine. The 1980s and 1990s era was really beautiful. I will do anything to go back in those days. Beautiful indeed.
