I was looking for a new Korean action film to watch after Oldboy, The Chaser, and I Saw The Devil. I stumbled upon No Mercy and decided to go in blind.
I had great luck in past, but my goodness, No Mercy has completely ruined my hot streak of great Korean films.
The overall concept of the film is great on paper, but the director must've had a stroke writing the storyline. There are quite a few times where the film would skip crucial details and go on a random tangent. The amount of plot holes make the film unbearable.
Here are just some plot holes that made no sense:
In-Ae (main protagonist) has an autistic sister who requires special assistance, but goes to class normally? Where are her parents? How did the sister survive on her own while In-Ae was in prison?
In-Ae knows that her sister had prior exposure to potential threats, but doesn't take the initiative to make sure her sister gets home safe from school?
Why doesn't In-Ae have a cellphone, but the sister does?
Why didn't the henchman who held Eun-Hye captive just tell In-Ae his location? Why did In-Ae go to the congressman and ask where her sister is? Did she not just get off the phone with the henchman who wanted to betray his boss?
In-Ae's objective was to kill the congressman but hesitated. She trained in the Korean Army. Not once, did she attempt to shoot the tires out of the congressman's car during the car chase?
In-Ae's level of violence from one antagonist to another is quite random. One guy gets his hand smashed to pieces and then gets crushed by a car, but the guy who sold his sister gets to live?
I am sure I am missing more, but the whole film is a mess. The only reason I gave it two stars is that the action portion of the film was done well.
