Around the world, journalism and press freedom are facing their biggest challenges in decades. Traditional media business models are in decline, while journalists themselves are being accused of reporting “fake news,” being imprisoned, and even being killed. In this Stanford Continuing Studies course, top journalists, press experts, and media critics engage in lively discussions and enlightening lectures on a range of issues addressing the key role the press should play in our democracies. Dawn Garcia, director of Stanford’s John S. Knight Fellowship program, serves as host and moderator.

This class will feature an in-depth discussion with a noted journalist of color and a panel discussion with a broader group of reporters and editors about the complexities they face doing their jobs every day.

This moderated conversation will feature journalists who cover the powerful, such as the Trump administration, with time for questions from the class.
