Traditional media business models are in decline, while journalists themselves are being accused of reporting “fake news,” being imprisoned, and even being killed. In this Stanford Continuing Studies course, top journalists, press experts, and media critics engage in lively discussions and enlightening lectures on a range of issues addressing the key role the press should play in our democracies. Dawn Garcia, director of Stanford’s John S. Knight Fellowship program, serves as host and moderator.

Failing business models and changing reader habits have decimated local news organizations in many communities. Legacy news organizations are still trying to adapt to the changing landscape, while new business models are emerging to try to fill the gaps.

As issues of bigotry and prejudice rise to the fore, many journalists must navigate issues of personal identity while accurately informing the public about on these issues. This class will feature an in-depth discussion with a noted journalist of color and a panel discussion with a broader group of reporters and editors about the complexities they face doing their jobs every day.

One of the most important functions of a free press is helping to the hold the powerful accountable to the people, whether the powerful be governments, technology platforms, corporations or other large institutions. This moderated conversation will feature journalists who cover the powerful, such as the Trump administration, with time for questions from the class.
