'UNFRIENDED': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
Low budget horror flick, with a pretty creative twist on the found footage genre. It tells the story of six friends video chatting, that are harassed by a dead friend; who was bullied into committing suicide. The entire movie was filmed in one take, in one house, with all of the cast members in different rooms. It was improvised using constant script changes, to keep the feel of the film natural and suspenseful, and it all takes place on a screencast of one of the character's laptops. The film was directed by Levan Gabriadze, written by Nelson Greaves and stars a cast of mostly unknown actors (including Shelley Hennig, Moses Jacob Storm, Renee Olstead, Will Peltz, Jacob Wysocki, Courtney Halverson and Heather Sossaman).
The entire film takes place on one high school girl's computer screen, her name is Blaire (Shelley Hennig). It's set exactly one year after her friend, Laura (Heather Sossaman), committed suicide. A video of Laura passed out drunk was posted online and other classmates bullied her into severe depression, which led to her killing herself; video of her suicide was also posted on the internet. Blaire begins video chatting with her boyfriend, Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm), on Skype; and four other friends join in. They're also joined by a mysterious, unidentified, account; that turns out to be the ghost of Laura, haunting them.
The movie is creative, original and completely natural. Having the actors film their scenes all in one take, while improvising most of their dialogue, was a brilliant way to film this movie (I also like that it all takes place on one computer screen). I've seen a lot of found footage flicks, and I'm a pretty big fan of the genre (and horror movies as well), but I've never seen one quite like this. It feels a lot like 'THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT' for the internet era! If you've spent a lot of time online, like I have, the film also has a very realistic and natural social media feel to it. It seems like you're watching real people chatting online and the thing that's most creepy, and disturbing, about the movie, is how immoral all of the teens are in it (they're all pretty screwed up). Some people will absolutely hate this film but I really enjoyed it and I also think it will become a popular cult classic, in it's own right (with lots of sequels, for many years to come)!
