I'm a little surprised at the many one-star reviews for this film. My son (age 11) and I watched it one day when he was home sick, and we found it perfectly good entertainment. The acting was fine, the effects were decent, and there was a coherent story. That's a LOT more than I can say for other straight-to-video movies that we've watched, including 2012: Supernova and others of that ilk. Of course we noticed right away that The Rock was not involved, so perhaps we adjusted our expectations accordingly, and therefore were not as disappointed as other users on this site. Of course it's derivative of other mythologies, but that's not really a bad thing, when you're looking for an escapist 2 hours. As a side note, I enjoyed the main female character, who is pretty, but also strong and feisty - so often I almost grind my teeth down to nubs at the offensive way that women are portrayed in action movies - stupid, helpless, and clearly only there so the camera can linger on their cleavage and other, er, assets.

The Scorpion King 2 - Rise of a Warrior I honestly think, that the current rating of 3.8 is not doing this movie justice, and I will try to find words why I think so. The action (which I would say is most important here) was actually pretty well done (at least as far as a PG-13-movie can do it), that is the fights were well choreographed and slow-motion was used quite effectively. I would exclude the scenes of Randy Couture wrestling down his opponents, because I wasn't aware that the Egyptians invented the WWF as well. As for the characters, they were likable although cliché (then again, so were the characters in the first movie). At least they were not the type of unlikeable idiots, one has to deal with in many horror-movies or comedies. They were all well cast, with the exception of our hero's mother, who looked totally out of place for the setting. Also I have to say, I never quite felt the charm that some reviewers attest Dwayne Johnson in the first part. I thought he did not do well as a main character, at least in this kind of movie. I would even go as far as saying that Michael Copon looks the part better than The Rock does. The set design and costume design were good. The weapons and armor looked real enough to appear to be more than toys, real enough to suspend one's disbelieve. As for the setting, I'd say, you can't go wrong with desert-and-Egyptian-style-temples. On the other hand, the story was predictable and there were some plot holes, but overall it could have been worse (especially towards the ending I was even quite surprised). And it has been done worse in countless other movies of this kind. It's just an average young-boy-rises-to-hero-story and for 90 minutes of entertaining what can be wrong with that? Unfortunately, and that is a big let-down, to call the special effects average would be already exaggerating. They are only slightly above Playstation-1-Level, especially in some crucial scenes. But also here you will find worse. So all in all I rate this movie 6 out of 10. It's not as good as the first part, but if you liked the Mummy-movies, if you liked the first Scorpion King-film and/or if you simply like sword-and-sorcerer-flicks (and I do), give it a watch.

I was thirty minutes into this before I realized that, based the reviews, this is supposed to be a horrible, awful and not very good movie (but mostly horrible). It was none of that. It's what you'd expect from a low budget, straight to disc action film. Maybe my enjoyment level was increased by my low expectations. Or maybe it was the well choreographed fight scenes (there are plenty). Maybe it was the reasonably believable plot. Maybe all of the above? I liked it, but then I watched it late in the evening and was hungry for an OK and entertaining flick for dessert. I didn't expect too much, but I was still entertained and satisfied, even surprised.

A story about a young Scorpion king.........great. I loved the previous Scorpion king movie, so i hoped i would like this one too. When i finally watched it, my feelins were mixed. It was BAD. It was like watching a TV series pilot episode of "Young Hercules". THe BAD - Horrible effects. the CGI is bad. At times CGI for the creatures look like old Ray Harryhausen stop-motion effects. Don't know if this was intentional(the producers wanting a more "classic" look to the movie) or just the result of unskilled CGI artists or low budget. - Bad script and wooden acting. I have no idea why Randy Couture's is up on the DVD casing in such big letters. HE CAN'T ACT and He's given terrible lines!!! Sargon comes across as some Dragonball Z villain reject. Other lines for other characters in the script make the movie sound like a Saturday morning cartoon. - predictable stock characterization. The hot warrior chick, comic relief Asian guy, quirky englishman(he's supposed to be Greek in the show), sexy evil goddess etc etc. Been there done that. BORING. - "Been there done that" story. The good - THe director. THe direction, especially the fight scenes are excellent. This director seems to be able to make the most of the movie's small budget and at least provide some interesting action to counter the uninteresting story. It is thanks to creative directing that the low budget of the movie is not so easily seen at first glance. - Michael Copon, the actor who plays young Scorpion king. Though he doesn't look like a young Rock At least he tries to mimic the way the Dwayne "theRock" Johnson(in the previous SCorpion king movie) moves, acts and speaks. He even flashes the Rock's eyebrow thingy move during the movie. 1 last comment. AFter watching this, seems that either the Mummy Returns has their history wrong or THe Scorpion king Mathyus is a really silly man. During his life he fought a) A warrior king who made a pact with a dark god in exchange for eternal power and ends up as some scorpion monster b) A warlord with a marauding legion of troops that go around conquering cities And by the time the flashback at the start of Mummy Returns happens, Mathyus is doing BOTH those things. Commanding a marauding legion which conquers cities AND making pacts with dark gods resulting in a Scorpion monster transformation. A bit of trivia: Mathyus at first wanted to travel to Egypt to get the "spear of Osiris" to defeat Sargon. But he is convinced to go to Greece instead for a different artifact. The Spear of Osiris is what Rick O connell used in Mummy Returns to kill the monster Scorpion king.

My first thought of this movie was that it reminds me of when they first started experimenting with animations; all the creatures and every other animation sections in this movie is so bad that I was wondering if this movie title had a mistype and should have been "1988" instead of "2008". This movie were not even close to pulling me into it's story line. I had no feel of actually watching a movie; I was just sitting here and wondering how they can make such a movie nowadays. The entire script gives me the feeling of being pulled out from some englishamerican punk-movie made some 20 years ago and the entire setting is so off I almost wanted to start crying. I would not recommend this movie to anyone, except for the ones who wants a good laugh. Another thing I did not like was the filming and sound effects. They try and use the "shaking camera" feature to make it seem more realistic at some points, but it feels so messy it's a bit hard to see what's actually ON the screen. And the sound effects at some parts reminded me of some old horror movie where you have a bunch of teenagers running around in a dark cave or a dark forest with all those "woshes and screaming" in the background. This was, without doubt, the most disappointing and least satisfying movie I have seen in years, maybe ever.

If you expect some cool masterpiece of special effects and grandiose acting, you will be disappointed. If you understand and accept that this is like a more serious episode from Hercules or Xena, then you will probably like it. I like Michael Copon. I have no idea what make him star in this film, but he didn't do too bad. The script is just ridiculous, of course, but loyal to the "he killed my dad, I need revenge" thing that is so popular nowadays. Everybody looks ridiculously good, especially the girls (well, I am a guy, so it figures). The effects are simple, but to the point. Bottom line: it's a video release. It's either a gem in the gutter or it is the gutter, right?
