MUTANT WAR is another of Director Bret Piper's sci-fi / monster epics. Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Harry Trent (Matt Mitler) tools around in his Road Warrior-mobile trying to stay alive. Teaming up with a woman named Spider (Kristine Waterman), the two do battle with hordes of pig-ugly mutants, and attempt to free their female prisoners. Continuous action and mega-cheeeze ensue. Fans of ultra-low budget films featuring stop-motion monsters, ham-headed mutants, and Cameron Mitchell will be ecstatic. Piper has made a niche for this sort of stuff, with very little money, but obvious heart...

I quite enjoyed MUTANT WAR, a straight-to-video independent science fiction movie made as a sequel to GALAXY DESTROYER. The story is about a hero wandering a post-apocalyptic landscape and struggling to survive against overwhelming odds. There are giant stop motion creatures straight out of a Ray Harryhausen movie, cloaked attackers like the ones from STAR WARS, zombies, and various human gangs with murder in mind. There's little in the way of plot but plenty in the way of action, all of it delivered enthusiastically on what is a very low budget indeed. The special effects are generally cheesy but fun and while the acting is nothing to write home about, Cameron Mitchell shows up late on to amuse as an OTT bad guy. It's not quite on par with Steve Barkett's THE AFTERMATH, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Scruffy thief turned savior Harry Trent (a solid and likeable performance by Matt Mitner) faces off against evil warlord Reinhart Rex (robustly played by the ubiquitous Cameron Mitchell), who reigns supreme with his army of hideous mutants and abducts fertile young lasses for breeding purposes. Writer/director Brett Piper keeps the enjoyable story moving along at a snappy pace, brings an engaging earnest sensibility to the lively proceedings, and stages the rousing action sequences with aplomb. The funky old school practical f/x include some neat matte paintings and a few gnarly stop-motion animation monsters. Mitner projects a winning sardonic charm in his reluctant hero role while the cute Kristine Waterman adds plenty of spark and spunk as the feisty Spider. An entertaining Grade B romp.

I really wasn't expecting to like the movie, so throughout the time watching, i was pleasantly surprised. Loved the use of models and clay animation, gave the movie a quaint, second movie at the drive-in feel. An all around good vibe happening from this flick.

Part "Spacehunter," part "Bronx Warrior," and all low-budget-ridiculousness. I'm not going to defend "Mutant Hunter" as a good film, because it is not, but I did find myself quite enjoying it's cheesiness. This sequel to "Galaxy" finds out Han Solo-wannabe hero wandering a post apocalyptic earth destroyed by aliens, where he helps a young woman free her sister from an evil warlord, genre regular Cameron Mitchell. It's all quite dumb, but this sequel features more (badly done) special effects than its predecessor, which adds to its entertainment value, as well as more monster/alien make-up, loads of obvious matte shots, and a bunch of enjoyably silly looking miniature space ships. As with the first film, this sequel feels like a bunch of friends got together to make a movie they were all really excited about, and although they lack the scrappy talent of say Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell when they made the original "Evil Dead," writer/director Brett Piper and star Matt Mitler make up for their lack of talent with enthusiastic effort. Overall, this one is strictly for aficionados of bad 80s sci-fi.
