Birth/Rebirth is a medical thriller and deals with two women trying to play God, each for her own reasons. They both meet after one of them loses her daughter and the other one is able to revive her. Both characters are now testing how far they can go to keep her alive because to survive they will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. The movie definitely turns more towards the drama/thriller site and only a few pieces of horror are put in this. Marin Ireland and especially Judy Reyes are doing a really great job in their respective roles and the movie is definitely tension filled. Although I have to say that the tone the movie is going for is not really my cup of tea because I was hoping for more horror and less drama, but I think the movie did a good job and if you are someone who this sounds interesting to you will probably enjoy it. With Birth/Rebirth, first-time director Laura Moss has given new life to the legend of Dr Frankenstein and his monster. Not content with simply rehashing the familiar themes of a scientist with a God complex and a misunderstood monster, Moss shifts our focus to how they apply to both modern science and motherhood. First there is the ethical boundary of how far science can go to either save life or alleviate human suffering. Second is the notion of how a woman's material instinct can be corrupted when given a second chance (and even a third). The movie deviously has the audience weigh what course of action is more horrific: how Casper abuses her own body in the name of science, that she's brought a child back to life or the extreme lengths Celie and Casper will go to keep Lila alive. To her credit, Moss treats the subject matter seriously throughout, to the point where several scenes may be triggering for some. (The movie's gore is limited but convincing and may force you to avert your eyes.) Like 2020's excellent The Invisible Man, Birth/Rebirth makes an old monster relevant by viewing it from a woman's perspective. Recommended. Detroitcineaste dot net.

No pun intended - you may have seen the show Sneaky Pete - which had Marin star in it. So there is the connection, in case you were wondering. Also she is quite ... well her character is quite "sneaky". Maybe not in the sense you may think .. also she has the best intentions ... doesn't she? That was rhetoric of course. I had no idea, what I was about to watch. This being part of the Fantasy Filmfest it could have been anything. Genre and otherwise that is. The acting was really good and the twists kept on coming! You may be able to see some of them - but even so, they are not less shocking! Well shot and edited, this is or touches upon the drama genre ... and our lifelong search for answers to questions about extension of life ... especially if we are not able to let go. Not sure if there is any medical accuracy ... I assume it is as close as it can get (some things seem to fantastical) ... so take that with a grain of salt ... and just enjoy the craziness .. what would you do? In any of the places ... Stephen King must like this I assume!

There was the movie The Influencer from Shudder I watched recently and now this one. Its cool to see the streaming service evolve over a short time, and now producing some of the best horror movies coming out in recent years. The two things which sold this movie to me, was one the medical research detail, and secondly the special effects. Although bringing someone back to life is pretty implausible, this movie goes as far as it can do to sell the idea to those (like my self) who are not medically trained. The medical sequences do look very realistic, and the story does get dug in to the science and procedures, where most other dumbed down horror modern movies fear to tread.
