Slow moving, overly melodramatic story not helped by background Beethoven's fifth.

Quite performance from the actors, but the history seems to have a lack, feels like since the beginning they will bring a social question to us, but suddenly, the movie starts to rush, with a brief development about the background of the main character and how the institutional racism affects him. I was unable to relate the title of the movie from what he bring to us aswell.

Black guy hooks up with white girl. Yawn. Jungle Fever tropes abound.

It's stays very true to the book in many ways and I've always thought the book would make a great movie. I understood why they tried to make it contemporary because there is no question that racism is not gone. However certain aspect of the story don't really work very well in modern society. There were also odd choices like making the Bigger's family wealthier and him having a job at the beginning that make his choices less clear throughout.

This isnt really a great movie but it has a knd of unique tone and feel to it, a tone that is very hard to define and beucause of that its intriguing. The lead acting is fenomenal!

You know a movie does a good job when it disturbs you days afterwards. The tension builds slowly until breaking point and then sadly it just kinds of peters off in a totally different direction however Ashton's performance from beginning to end was excellent. The whole cast bought depth to their characters, no matter small or big their onscreen time was. The scenery was really well thought out and it draws you in. The settings felt intimate and it exemplified the rawness of each character.

This is like modern-day racial profiling against our black society... In the movie, the white girl Mary forced Big to try to have sex and it lead to a crime when she had a pillow covered over her face... Bigger was trying to get her to go to sleep later that night & this all lead to Mary coming on to him... People sometimes dont get to see the real truth of what really happens, and thats why he have to turn hiself in. He is now lost in the place of mind whether he should live for it or keep it a secret. It is really tough for us being African-American males and this is why we shouldnt date nobody from out our race. Things like this happen all of the time and we get blamed for the consequences. This whole movie was sad.... I love white people, but this was very depressing.

A few memorable lines buried in a straight to video storyline and lots of 1st year film class acting. The main character's supposed 'edgy contradictions' is interesting until one discovers it's being asked to carry a corporate motel bowl of oatmeal to the finish line.
